Toshiba Launches Five Minute Rechargeable Batteries

We've seen similar tech from Sony with the Quick Charge feature in its Walkmans, but this takes that idea and bobsleighs with it...

Toshiba has today announced the formal launch of its 'Super Charge ion Battery' (SCiB), a lithium-ion based battery which can charge to 90 per cent of its full capacity in just five minutes and offer a life span in excess of 10 years.

The reason for this is the batteries themselves are designed to be able to absorb huge voltages without damage meaning they can sidestep the drip-feed approach adopted today. Interestingly, this robustness also means SCiBs last longer and can operate at temperatures as low as -24F.

Sadly - as is always the case in these things - SciBs will be given to industry first for use in developing more efficient electric cars, creating electric motorbikes and in general trying to save trivial stuff like the planet. All of which means it's going to be a few years before it filters down to laptop and mobile phone manufacturers to give us the portable devices of our dreams.

Still, shipments begin in March 2008 so fingers crossed Apple, Samsung, Toshiba and the rest partake in a bit of industrial spying...
