Toshiba Insider Confirms Company Dropping HD DVD

Not days after there was some rumour from ‘reliable industry sources' that Toshiba might be looking to call it quits with HD DVD, we've now almost got a confirmation. While there's nothing official as yet, the word on the street is that Toshiba insiders are backing up the claims, suggesting that a full retreat from its current preferred HD format is forthcoming - at least according to Reuters.

The report quotes an anonymous Toshiba spokesman as stating that "{Toshiba has} entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business" while also indicating that an official announcement could be made as soon as next week.

If true the move would almost certainly signal the end of HD DVD, seeing as it was Toshiba's frankly insane price cuts that were keeping the format alive thus far. As I commented when the rumours first surfaced, Warner's defective blow does appear to have hurt the formats future fortunes considerably.

Hopefully we'll get some information from Toshiba one way or another as to what's happening. For now we'll have to speculate and, for those of us who have insisted all along that a single format is better for all, cross our fingers.
