The World's Fastest LCD Monitors

Looking for a lightening quick LCD screen? ViewSonic has just announced two of them.

The VX924 (above) and VX724 have 19in and 17in displays respectively and both boast world record response times of just four milliseconds (ms). Now anyone who is a bit of a monitor aficionado will know exactly how important this is, but for those of you in doubt response times basically refer to the time it takes for a liquid crystal cell to transition between colours. Obviously, the lower the time the better as a high response time can lead to “ghosting” of images, and blurring during fast moving video or gaming.

In the case of the VX924 and VX724, ViewSonic’s four millisecond response time is strictly a slight cheat because, while it can achieve this with grey to grey transitions, when using the conventional "off to on to off" measurement, these screens boast a response time of 4.8ms. So, ViewSonic's new babies have a 4.8ms response time when compared to competing products. It doesn't matter though, either way, it’s still a record! (FYI: BenQ's comes closest with the FP71V+, a 5ms monitor it released a few months back).

Nitpicking over details aside, both these beauties should be stunning when it comes to a game of Half Life 2 or watching a DVD, while high definition video will pose no problems as it begins to creep out over the next year or so.

Moving away from the headlining aspect of these monitors, lets break down the rest of the specs. The VX924 has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024, a high contrast ratio of 550:1 and ultra wide viewing angle of up to 160 degrees both horizontally and vertically. The panel surface itself is anti-glare and connection options are via either analogue or DVI-D. Physically you shouldn’t need to build up too many new muscles to move it around as it weighs a modest 8.5Kg and if anything goes hideously wrong you’ll be protected by a three year warranty.

We’d love to give you full details on the VX724 (above) but strangely, apart from the screen size, none are currently available. We’ll update you when we get em however. At this stage price UK pricing also remains a mystery but the VX924 will cost $549 including VAT in the US and will ship worldwide in May. The secretive VX724 will come out a month later in June.
