First covered almost a year ago to the day, Electronic Arts’ long awaited Godfather game is almost upon us.
After slipping on a number of occasions the title will officially hit, slap and pistol whip its way to shelves on 24 March for PS2, Xbox and PC. PSP and Xbox 360 versions to follow later in the year.
Based on the critically acclaimed book by Mario Puzo which inspired the classic 1972 Francis Ford Coppola movie and its two sequels, the game will adopt a Grand Theft Auto style of approach giving you the role of a young employee entering the Corleone family. Though not based scene-by-scene on the novel or film, the title instead drops you its living world which features all the classic characters and more than 20 re-recorded vocals from original cast members including James Caan (Santino 'Sonny' Corleone), Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen) and John Martino (Paulo Gato). Even the great Marlon Brando managed to contribute new dialogue before his passing. The original score by Nino Rota has also been licensed with 100 additional minutes of music created by Academy Award wining composer Bill Conti.
As for the game itself, the challenge will be to work your way up the mob ranks choosing your own methods along the way, whilst also becoming involved in classic moments from the movies. ‘Respect’, ‘Family’ and ‘Territory’ are the key factors to juggle during your rise and, as you can already see, it looks spectacular.
EA clearly has very high hopes for the game too as it has already announced plans to make sequels even before the first game arrives in stores. As you might expect, these titles will be based on the second and third parts to the movies and will feature appropriate changes to the family and reflect the times of the newer decades.
"We wanted to make a category leader that would give significant competition to the GTA game and basically would provide a very formidable alternative," said executive producer David DeMartini. It could prove to be an offer too good to refuse…
