I’m a bit slow off the mark with this one, but for those who haven’t spotted it already Tesco has just picked one heck of a battle.
Having already slapped Walmart across the face with an armoured glove Britain’s largest supermarket chain has decided to raise the hackles of Microsoft, Symantec, McAfee and more by stepping into the software market.
Over the next 12 months Tesco will release its own branded office suite, two security and antivirus tools, a personal finance application, optical media burning software and a photo editing programme. Each one is co-developed with Cambridge based coder Formjet and will cost less than £20. Given that Microsoft Office can cost north of £300 the software could be a big hit not just with students and those on a budget but across the market.
Beginning this month, the launch will also see Tesco make a further push into the computer hardware market via its website: Tesco.com. Customer support for both hardware and software will come via the company’s new website TescoSoftware.com which currently sports a holding page (above).
“With more people working from home and schools encouraging greater use of IT the demand for home computing equipment is bigger than ever,” said Tesco buyer Daniel Cook. “Customers can now access a wide range of good quality computer hardware at amazing prices but when it comes to software there is little choice and prices are high. Our new range of software changes this, bringing choice and value to the market that has offered little of either for too long.”
