Today a company – which is already establishing itself as one of my favourite manufacturers of 2007 – announced it has managed to incorporate a DLP projector into a working prototype handset.
No details were revealed about what resolution, brightness or contrast ratio could be expected from the technology – dubbed the 'DLP pico-projector' – but TI did reveal it is small enough to fit onto a fingertip!
“As the leader in home theatre and business projection, TI DLP Products continues to develop new and exciting ways that our manufacturing customers can apply DLP technology in innovative consumer products,” said Frank J. Moizio, Worldwide Strategic Marketing and Business Development Manager of TI DLP Front Projection. “Over the next few years, we envision a large opportunity for the convergence of projection technology and mobile devices, like cell phones,”
Of course, taking a step back from this excitement – much like I did with the iPhone launch – a few vital questions need to be asked:
*What will we project these images on? After all it is a technology for on the move but – from a consumer perspective – setting up a surface on a train, tube or bus isn't the easiest thing to do.
*How will it effect battery life?
*How much will it cost?
*When will it become available?
That said, I don't want to pooh pooh such an intriguing announcement too much because it is inherently true that good things come to those who wait...?
Update: TI has been able to fill me in on some of the pico-projector specs. It is capable of throwing out an HVGA resolution (640 x 240 pixels) – not this HVGA – to roughly the size of an A4 piece of paper in ambient light conditions. The light source can also be either LED or laser, which will be down to the manufacturer.
