We’re getting into the business end now, TDK is shipping mass production Blu-ray samples.
“Mass production Blu-ray samples, what is that exactly?” Good question. It is the discs that go out in large quantities to developers, third party testers, manufacturers and the like to see if they can find any problems with what is, essentially, the finished product.
What is interesting too is that it is not just your 25GB standard single layer Blu-ray discs that have made it this far either. Dual layer 50GBers are there as well. Both are available in either single write or rewriteable standards and have the company’s innovative Durabis coating we talked about here in May.
What this means for release dates is still unclear, however, with the PlayStation 3 still appearing to be the debut device for this media but large quantities of discs certainly look like they will be available from day one. In all, the news amounts to another kick in privates for HD DVD which may now be regretting it couldn’t come to some sort of compatibility agreement with its rival earlier in the year. Stubbornness has its merits, but you need to know how to pick your battles and at this moment in time HD DVD looks like it is in for a bit of a kicking…
