TDK Plans 200GB Blu-ray Disc

If there is one area Blu-ray hopes will help it gazump HD DVD it is capacity and company of the week TDK has just shown exactly why.

After becoming the first manufacturer to actually get Blu-ray media to retailers on Tuesday the company has now gone one better by announcing development on a massive 200GB disc. Both TDK and Sharp had previously announced work midway through last year on 100GBers, but thankfully after that each seemed to direct more attention on actually getting single layer versions of the next gen technology out the door. With TDK having completed that (and thus helped to calm my prior rant on the subject) it has started to dream again.

With Blu-ray capable of holding 25GB per layer it doesn’t take a maths genius to work out the challenge TDK has ahead is cramming eight of the little beggers into a thin disc without making it as durable as a chocolate fireguard. Clearly the key here is managing to get its Durabis protective coating up to scratch (pun sadly intended) when spread as thinly as a topping on a Tesco Value pizza. We’re sure they’ll succeed though, technology always does.

Needless to say there is no release date mooted for such a humongous disc but given that an eight layered HD DVD could only hold 120GB it sure gives the Blu-ray camp something to get excited about. I can even think of a practical application: Lord of Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition with director commentaries…
