Weighty US papers the Wall Street Journal and New York Times may be indulging in far more rumour mongering and speculation than they did in yesteryear (and their records aren't great) but we certainly hope this one is true...

According to the NYT, T-Mobile USA will crank out the world's first commercial Android handset "before Christmas, perhaps as early as October" which may end speculation it would be delayed well into 2009. Even more enticingly it is claimed FFC approval is only factor currently holding up an official ""three-way Google, T-Mobile, and HTC announcement as early as September".

Naturally details about the handset itself remain a tightly guarded secret but it is expected to feature a full sliding physical Qwerty keyboard and I doubt it'll differ much from the long mooted Dream (possible prototype image above) or indeed HTC's established Windows Mobile sliders of recent years. After all, it'll be the first of its kind and I expect HTC (it's going to be HTC!) to stick with what it knows. It's also likely to be many months ahead of any further Android models.

Funnily enough - whether this Android handset arrives on time or not - the shockwaves from the OS are already being felt around the mobile industry. It has led Apple to create App Store and Nokia to open up Symbian and eager readers I expect this to be just the tip of the iceberg...
