Super Mario Galaxy 2 Gets UK Release Date

Gordon Kelly

While I'll admit the Final Fantasy series leaves me completely cold, I can appreciate a good yarn with the World's most famous Italian plumber - and this latest outing is shaping up to be a doozy...

Nintendo has finally given us a release date for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and we Brits will be able to snap it up from 11 June. Still four months? On the one hand we should be grateful since this will be the first 3D Mario sequel to launch on the same console (a scary stat) and yet those lucky Yanks will get it from 23 May, so Nintendo will likely have brought a rash of grey market imports upon itself.

What can we say about the new game? From the brand new Media Summit 2010 trailer released this week it looks every bit as impressive as we had hoped and, while Nintendo can be criticised for many things, wondrous, sprawling, 3D worlds packed with imagination are not one of them.

Super Mario Galaxy was one of our favourite games of 2007, fingers crossed its sequel can succeed where Super Mario Sunshine arguably struggled under the weight of Super Mario 64. Yes indeed, 2010 is shaping up to be a classic year for gamers...

As crazy and imaginative as ever, but I think the lack of HD is really starting to hurt the Wii's visual potential with game's like this.

Looks fantastic. It shows that hardware limitations often cause developers to stretch their imagination. Only problem with the Wii, being that first party games being the only ones that are ever consistently good. Like the DS there is a load of rubbish on both platforms.

Obviously the graphics won't compare to the other consoles but I think the imagination, charm and fun should more than make up for it. Shame it's only one player. Me and Mrs Ravmania have been having a good laugh playing NSMBW.

Coronation Street is in development too according to todays press. How can I resist a waggle over a pint down the Rovers Return with Ken & Diedre.

I've not played computer games for over 10 years, thought i'd just look at this to see what graphics were like these days. I'm actually really unimpressed, it doesn't look very different to what I remember. I thought by now it'd be far more realistic and slicker looking.

@HK Mario realistic? I think you should avoid the Wii for an update. They tried with Mario a 'Bob Hoskins" movie and it bombed i think.

This is the first Wii game that makes me sad I sold my Wii a while back. So much rubbish on the system but this will be fantastic.

@ravmania: Hehe, "Mrs Ravmania", that made me laugh for some reason...

Sorry, give her my best :D.

@HK: I think you'll have to go back and look at the Mario of ten years ago to really appreciate it; tends to cloud or minds ;).

Also, @HK and @hank: On the topic of Mario realism... {!Freaky Warning!} http://www.wired.com/images_bl...

That was meant to say: "nostalgia" tends to cloud "our" minds.

Clearly something was clouding mine at the time...
