The fifth of September really can't come any sooner, allowing us Europeans to get our hands on Spore, definitely my most-anticipated game of 2008. For those of us who really can't wait another two-and-a-bit months, though, Maxis and EA have devised a cunning a solution: sell the Creature Creator segment of the full game prior to launch. Tomorrow, the 17th of June, in fact.
This is a pretty clever idea for two reasons. For one, it means that the Spore servers will already have a large supply of creatures with which to populate peoples' planets when the game goes on sale and for two it's a pretty clever way of making some money from an as-yet unreleased title. Not that we mind - I need to get started creating the HugoThon race.
If you really can't wait to get your hands on the real deal, the demo version of the Creature Creator which should have launched alongside the paid-for 'game' has already been leaked. We can't tell you exactly where (piracy is bad mmm'kay), but if you want to find it using something that begins with 'G' and rhymes with 'Moogle' might help.
Price wise EA will charge you £4.99 for the privilege of downloading the Creature Creator, but will give you a discount code for the full version of Spore - as long as you buy that direct from EA's online store too. If you are definitely going to buy Spore and don't mind not owning a physical copy EA is in effect offering you the Creature Creator for free. By that summation you really should be downloading it by now.
