It is said good things come in fours (Ok, it’s not but work with me here!), so there was much whoppin’ and a hollarin’ today when Ubisoft announced the latest in its Splinter Cell franchise.
Splinter Cell: Double Agent takes the hugely popular series in an entirely new direction, if a not a linguistically correct one. See if you can spot the problem for the press blurb:
“Veteran agent Sam Fisher is back. But he's never faced an enemy like this before. To stop a devastating terrorist attack, he must infiltrate a vicious terrorist group and destroy it from within. For the first time ever, experience the relentless tension and gut-wrenching dilemmas of life as a double agent. As you infiltrate a terrorist organization in its American headquarters, you must carefully weigh the consequences of your actions. Kill too many criminals and you'll blow your cover. Hesitate too long and millions will die. Do whatever it takes to complete your mission, but get out alive.”
Sure it gives you the basic idea, but Double Agent? Surely Undercover Agent, no? Semantics aside, the game looks to be a cracker building strongly on the TR recommended Chaos Theory which Stuart reviewed back in April. Dual objectives will be demanded with NSA government agents and terrorists each wanting you to accomplish opposing tasks at the same time, a branching storyline with multiple endings will twist and turn depending on your decisions, authentic government gadgets and black market terrorist weapons are incorporated into the game play and the online multiplayer action from Splinter Cell makes a welcome return.
Out in spring next year, it will grace Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, GameCube and Windows PC platforms. We just hope Ubisoft reads a dictionary between now and then…
