Sony Updates Notebooks For '06

Three four forward and no steps back for Sony this time as it kicks off the New Year by updating three of its most popular ranges and introducing another.

The new boy on the block is the muscular FE series, an Intel Centrino Core Duo machine with 15.4in WXGA res display, nVidia 7400 graphics and capacious 100GB HDD (a massive 160GB option is available).

Built around a magnesium alloy chassis, the FE line certainly looks the part and it focuses heavily on multimedia choosing to come with Windows Media Centre edition as the default OS and strongly promoting the connectivity options which include an integrated camera, Bluetooth and WiFi.

The old boys are the spiced up TX2 (above, left), FS400 and A600 (above, right). More power is the theme here with each receiving updated Intel Centrino chipsets and boosted graphics (the A600, in particular, gets an ATI X700 card). Dual layer DVD writers are now supplied all round and Sony boasts that the TX2 will still last a whopping 7.5 hours on a single charge (I bet MobileMark brings that down quite a bit).

All four models are going to be available before the end of the month, though Sony has given us no pricing details as yet. So if you’re looking to start 2006 with new, shiny, metallic Sony laptop the choice just got better… or more complicated, if you get driven crazy by ever expanding product codes….
