According to Sony Ericsson what do you get when you spray paint an existing model and half the size of the bundled memory card? A whole new model, that’s what!
Beware loyal readers a sharp one is being pulled today. Sony Ericsson has ‘unveiled’ its latest addition to the Walkman line. Only one problem: we’ve seen it, bought it and used it before.
The W700i is being marketed as ‘Your daily life Walkman phone’ which is rather ironic since being a W800i it is probably your current daily life Walkman phone. “But surely there must be some differences,” I hear you all cry in perfect unison creating a single great harmonious voice that makes me feel ever more egotistical. The answer is nope, uh uh, not a jot, zero. Unless you count colour that is, since the W700i is Titanium Gold which, for my money, looks more like dirty silver.
Tri-band, two megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, Memory Stick Pro Duo expansion slot, 262K 176 x 220 pixel screen, 100 x 46 x 20.5mm, 99g… any of this sound eerily familiar? Oh yes, I did leave out the included 512MB Memory Stick Duo, but that is only because it has been reduced to 256MB…
From a marketing point of view I can only assume SE has decided to phase out the W800i to create a larger space between where it stood and the recently upgraded W810i. Confusing everyone else in the process clearly doesn’t matter.
Right now I’m selling my old Mazda MX3 and this launch gives me some ideas. I figure I might spray it Titanium Gold, take half the petrol from the tank, rebadge it as an MX4 and flog it as a new model to some unsuspecting punter. Oh no, that would be fraud wouldn’t it...!!
