Sony Re-Works PlayTV Release Date, Price

PlayTV has been a pretty long time coming, but come next month we had thought those delays would be ending. It turns out, though, that the 10th of September release mooted by David Reeves isn't happening any more. Making up for that, though, the device is seeing a small price drop from what we expected.

In the UK at least, the device will now cost £69.99 rather than the €99 (~£80) we had previously heard. The release delay isn't that extensive either, slipping back a mere nine days, to (you guessed it) Friday the 19th. I doubt we'll see queues outside shops for this launch, though.

In case you aren't familiar with the concept, PlayTV is Sony's forthcoming PVR attachment for the PlayStation 3. Not only does it pack two digital tuners allowing the recording of one programme while watching another, but Sony's developers have magic-ed the latest firmware updates to allow recording while playing games. The decoders are even capable of decoding HD MPEG-4 streams, should anyone ever decide to broadcast some.

I quite like the look of this, however one negative thing that I have read is that they have changed the software so you can't move recorded TV from the PS3 anymore, i.e. if you want to move it onto a hard drive/memory stick to a PC for burning to a PC! If this is true its a real shame

I don't need another PVR as I use the Panasonic EX78 but I am interested in this due to its dual tuner capabilities.

It was previously mentioned that this could be updated to record Freeview HD broadcasts, when they eventually arrive. Is this still expected?

I was planning on getting one of these when it came out; my first TV tuner (?) in many years... I was even looking forward to it's release.

Sony's announcement yesterday though, of it not been able to transfer recorded files to, well, anywhere (after previous announcements that everything would be DRM free and freely transferable) are a bit of a kill joy. I highly doubt I'll be going through with the purchase anymore. From what I've read on various other sites, Sony have lost a LOT of sales from going back on this.

Another question, if this will (eventually) recieve freesat like im sure ive seen mentioned elsewhere as well as Orinj, how will you connect it to the PlayTV? I think im right in saying the you can get freesat through your Sky Dish if you have one (most houses seem to now :p) but this doesnt have a satalite feed,or so I believe?

It will be freeview with a mpeg4 codec (HD) instead of the mpeg2 codec (SD) so you don't need a sat fish :) if i remember correctly.
