As if PS3 owners needed much more persuading that PlayTV is just about the best PVR they could get, Sony's latest update has added upscaling of SD content - leveraging the processing power of the PlayStation 3 to enhance Freeview content.
According to Mark Bunting in a video over at the semi-official Three Speech blog, the SD upscaler is "basically magic with maths." Or, to put it in more realistic terms, sharpness and contrast are improved to make standard definition images look less so.
Bunting added that: "One day we want PlayTV to work in high definition, but we can only do that when free digital TV comes in HD, which at the moment only happens in France and Spain." Okay, so we do have Freesat in the UK, but HD Freeview is definitely still a mere pipe dream. It's nice to know Sony seem as keen on getting it as the rest of us, though.
Alongside the SD upscaler, additional fast forwards and rewind speeds and new volume controls are being added.
I can only suggest any PlayTV owners get updating.
