Sony PlayTV Gets SD Upscaler

As if PS3 owners needed much more persuading that PlayTV is just about the best PVR they could get, Sony's latest update has added upscaling of SD content - leveraging the processing power of the PlayStation 3 to enhance Freeview content.

According to Mark Bunting in a video over at the semi-official Three Speech blog, the SD upscaler is "basically magic with maths." Or, to put it in more realistic terms, sharpness and contrast are improved to make standard definition images look less so.

Bunting added that: "One day we want PlayTV to work in high definition, but we can only do that when free digital TV comes in HD, which at the moment only happens in France and Spain." Okay, so we do have Freesat in the UK, but HD Freeview is definitely still a mere pipe dream. It's nice to know Sony seem as keen on getting it as the rest of us, though.

Alongside the SD upscaler, additional fast forwards and rewind speeds and new volume controls are being added.

I can only suggest any PlayTV owners get updating.

I can't wait to give this a try when I get home from work. Hopefully it makes a noticeable difference.

Ah, but where is the Freesat HD PlayTV dongle? That would be killer.

Have Trusted Reviews actually reviewed PlayTV yet? I remember seeing lots of news articles about it last year but when it was actually released, nothing!

just waiting for a price cut and a redesigned psthree with integrated play tv to snap one up. am i asking for too much?

don't actually really want one for the games. i wouldn't mind trying out LBP and a new ico but it's more about the media features for me.

Is it really true that the in built upscalers in the tv are so much poorer than this? Or is there just not enough grunt in the tv hardware chips. I kinda thought one could take the upscaling algorithims, hardware-er-ise them and then they don't really need to be hard core chips, much like the mpeg decoding/encoding chips in graphics adapters.

The update still isn't live yet. Does anyone know when it will be?

Umm, yeah mine's not seeing any new updates either yet. I searched and found a video of a guy announcing the update, and it sounded like it was available immediately?

So what did it do before it had an SD upscaler? SD pictures took up 1/4 of the screen?
