Sony may make some of the best luxurious ultra portable notebooks around, but it looks set to show its a dab hand on a budget too...

Making a radical departure from its usual approach of proprietary designs and features, the Japanese giant is said to be readying its model based around the Via OpenBook. Just as surprising therefore are the fairly uninspiring OpenBook specs Sony would seem happy to base its machine around:

*Via 1.6 GHz C7-M processor
*VX800 chipset
*8.9-inch 1,024 x 600 pixel screen
*Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
*60GB hard disk
*1GB memory
*3x USB ports
*VGA port
*4-in-1 card reader
*Windows Vista Home Basic
*240 x 175 x 36.2mm and 1Kg

In a nutshell this would make the machine slower than both the Eee PC 900 and Atom-powered 901 and MSI Wind (which is also equipped with a 120GB HDD). Nope, it's just not very 'Sony'. Of course the snaps of the Sony machine are just a prototype and it could be the company has a lot of spitting and polishing still to do, or was simply looking to knock up something quickly and see if it liked the format.

All in all however this is a major shot in the arm (no pun intended) for Via which has also just won the Gold Award in the Computex Design and Innovation Awards.

Expect Sony to speak up on this soon...
