Sony Ericsson Outs New Walkman Range

Sony has been making a big hullabaloo about its three year Walkman handset anniversary and it has marked the day by announcing a mixed bag of handsets...

The trio - targeting low, mid and high end - would be more exciting had we not already scooped its W902 party piece (left): a 5 megapixel candybar with autofocus, HSDPA, a 2.2in QVGA screen and a bundled 8GB M2 card to make up for the paltry 25MB of memory but hey, that's what we do. Other notables on it include the we won't place nice with microSD like everyone else M2 expansion slot and the rare sight of a decent pair of bundled headphones in the form of the 'HPM-77' - though we'll be putting them under the close scrutiny of our Shure and Etymotic accustomed ears before offering too much praise.

The slider 'W595' (middle) is next up and matches the features of the W902 save for a lower 3.2MP camera and 2GB bundled M2 card (to hide the 45MB of memory) but it does offer a stereo Share jack if you want to be nice and dilute your own audio quality so a friend can listen too.

Finally, for those hit hard by the creditus crunchous the 'W302' (right) hacks away the 3G, drops to a 2MP camera and features 25MB of memory augmented by a piddly 512MB M2 card, though you will still get an FM radio and stereo Bluetooth as with its bigger brothers.

A surprisingly delayed Q4 release has been placed on all three which seems odd since there's nothing particularly futuristic about any of them, but should you be targeting some improved handset tunes this Chrimbo they're worth a look.

Will they be enough to turn around Sony Ericsson's recent profits horror show? I wouldn't bet on it and having had the chance to play with the XPERIA X1 today and its Touch Diamond-esque running-through-treacle-OS my hopes aren't overly high for that either. Sorry chaps.
