Sony Ericsson has seen the future of mobile gaming... and its carrying a Wii Nunchuck in your pocket! Well, not exactly - but kinda.
The super conglomerate has become the first company to jump on Zeemote's 'JS1' Bluetooth games controller which it will bundle with upcoming W760i Walkman handsets in Holland (then worldwide if it proves popular).
Now the Zeemote has been doing the rounds since earlier in the year but we'd stayed clear of it considering it kinda gimmicky and even the inclusion of a pair of compatible titles on the W760i at launch with a further 14 available through the Fun & Downloads section on Sony Ericsson NL won't be changing that. Still, here's what was said:
“Mobile gaming will never be the same as the Zeemote JS1 launches through our first commercial relationship with Sony Ericsson” said Jim Adams, VP of Worldwide Sales at Zeemote. “We are delighted to partner with Sony Ericsson and give users even more of a reason to buy the feature packed W760i. This agreement is the first of a number of deals we intend to announce over the coming months."
Really? A "number of deals"?
Ok, cynicism time. Call me crazy but I thought half the fun of programming for modern mobile devices was the cultivation of invention that their design necessitates: just a look at Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone. After all, if I really wanted to be gaming like this I'd be at home on a Wii and if I was away from home would I really want to carry something larger than my actual mobile around with me? It's yet thing to stick batteries in and charge and those who choose not to wear combat pants may find themselves fast running out of pocket space.
I rest my case at one minute 15 seconds into Zeemote's promotional video. I dare you to disagree this isn't a bit silly...
As for Sony Ericsson, fair play - you're currently in hard times and looking desperately keenly for the next big thing. Launching in a single country on a single model however pretty much shows the scope of the belief. Of course I could be wrong in all this...
...but I won't be.
Note: Yup, we're still waiting on Sony Ericsson & Zeemote imagery so (amusingly) this stock shot of a Motorola will have to do for now to give you the general idea. Ironically, this is also just the kind of thing luckless Motorola would jump on so... hang on, I've just had a brainwave: "a number of deals"... Gotcha!
