Sony Demonstrates 21in, 720p OLED TV

Sony is slowly inching closer to releasing an OLED TV that could replace an LCD or plasma model. The latest 21in display shown off at the Flat Panel Display expo in Japan boasts the same 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio as the XEL-1, but up the pixel count to 1,366 x 768 - enabling it to display HD content.

Unlike the XEL-1, Sony has integrated the tuner into this 21in TV, which is nonetheless less than 1cm thick. That's a little more than the XEL-1's panel but as the base of that was some 15cm deep the floor or countertop space needed to fit the 21in display is lesser. The models Sony demonstrated were integrated into a tower-like stand, so it's hard to tell exactly what size a free-standing unit is.

Considering the XEl-1 has an MSRP of £3,489, it's daunting to think how much this 21in model would cost if it went on sale. That doesn't seem likely in the near future, though, so for now just enjoy a little video footage:
