Sony CyberShot T9: Beauty & Brains

Sony again folks, but this time demonstrating one of its more positive sides: slim and light digital cameras.

At 89.7 x 54.9 x 20.6mm the CyberShot DSC T9 may not be as teeny tiny as the T7, but it manages to pack in a lot more functionality. For a start it is the company’s first attempt at squeezing in both optical image stabilisation (shaky hand blur remover) and super high light sensitivity (no need for flash in dim rooms) into such as skinny form factor. Sony has issued two (ridiculously small, but impressive) examples here.

On top of this funky gadgetry, the T9 also manages to stuff six whole megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 30fps VGA video, 2.5in LCD and 58MB of memory into its bulimic lines. At 159g it isn’t going to break any pockets and though it inevitably only swallows Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards we’re starting to understand that Sony believes in a non-negotiable pleasure/pain principle.

Battery life is ample providing 240 shots off a single charge and for the tacky… um, “fun loving” amongst you slideshows of your photos can be played back on the LCD under stylised themes with names like “Stylish” and “Active” (hmmmn). Dynamic transitions are also available so that cheap Star Wars wipe effect is on offer and all this photographic tomfoolery can be yours on 20 January.

UK pricing hasn’t been determined yet, but the Yanks look set to pay $450. Ignoring the stylised themes, I could think of worse ways to spend any left over Christmas money.
