Big (literally) announcements from Sony’s HDTV department today: it’s announced no less than fourteen additions to its Bravia lines.
Grabbing the most column inches will be the long awaited introduction of new ‘SXRD’ (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) micro-display HDTVs which are famous for their ultra slim lines.
True to form the 70in ‘KDS-Z70XBR5’ (above) and 60in ‘KDS-Z60XBR5’ are a remarkable 40 per cent slimmer than their predecessors, while the rear projection based 60in ‘KDS-60A3000’ (below left), 55in ‘KDS-55A3000’ and 50in ‘KDS-50A3000’ utilise this technology to lose 20 per cent off their girths. Naturally the XBR’s represents a flagship in their sizes and all come with 1080p native resolutions while Sony joins the likes of LG and Toshiba in adding 120Hz anti-motion blur technology. Dropping down a few sizes we are still in XBR5 land with the ‘KDL-52XBR’, ‘KDL-46XBR5’ and ‘KDL-40XBR5’, same features smaller screens
As for the XBR4s these comprise of 52in (below right), 46in and 40in models (I’m sure you can work out their product codes) and they too offer 120Hz technology and 1080p panels but drop the elegant floating glass designer bezels of the XBR5s for perhaps more tacky but somehow rather cool press-on bezels (you can see the backing beneath where the bezel would sit in the photo). Naturally, a black bezel will come as standard but eight others including Scarlet Red, Pacific Blue, Arctic White, Sienna Brown and Titanium Silver will also be available.
Finally – if you can take this product code craziness – we end with the W3000 series (above). Available in 52in (KDL-52W3000), 46in (KDL-46W3000) and 40in (KDL-40W3000) sizes, these 1080p-ers feature an array of Sony’s latest copyrighted image enhancement technologies such as ‘Live Color Creation’ (improves colour) and ‘x.v.Color’ (better colour matching) along with a new Bravia ‘Engine EX’ upscaler which promises to do a good job spit and polishing your DVDs and analogue broadcasts.

Oh, and if I have to write the letters KDL, KDS or XBR anytime in the next two months I QUIT!
