Sky Extends Half Price HD Box Deal

Sky is certainly keen to promote its HD service...

Following a very hush, hush Sky+ HD 50 per cent off promotion until the end of September the Murdock owned media giant has decided to make it something to shout about by extending the offer to 31 October.

In pure financial terms the deal means the £150 Sky+ HD box will now cost just £75 though it is worth noting under either price there comes a mandatory £60 installation fee.

For existing customers there is an upside to all this in the small print however and that is any currently installed Sky box will be serviced before it is removed for the Sky+ HD box meaning it receives a fresh 12 month warranty. Given the mere £10pm additional cost for upgrading to a multi-room setup I'd suggest you get this (re)installed at the same time.

The £75 deal also coincides with the launch of seven new Sky HD channels: Sky Movies Drama HD, Sky Movies Modern Greats HD, Sky Movies Action/Thriller HD, Sky Movies Sci-Fi/Horror HD, Sky Movies Family HD, Sky Movies Comedy HD (so basically all the flicks now) plus Sky Real Lives HD.

Total Sky HD channels now total a whopping 26 which is rather impressive, especially considering ITV HD won't arrive until next year when its Virgin/Freesat exclusive deals expire. So - Setanta aside (hurry up Irishmen!) - now looks a jolly good time to hop aboard.

I just did...

Sadly, if you want all the HD movies and the HD sports you're in the hole for up to &#16357 (!) a month. Considering it's a 12-month contract your TCO is over &#163750!! Oh, except you still need a TV license so there's another &#163139.50...

I just don't watch enough TV to justify &#16350 a month to Sky.

extremely true, i've cancelled my virgin media contract and switched to freeview, and even still i only really watch doctor who and bbc news (and top gear, which i swear the seasons are getting shorter). i don't even bother with BBC iplayer because VM throttle my speed midway leading to it constantly buffering the file.

@ilovethemonkeyhead - Have you tried the iPlayer downloadable program. That way you can download the BBC programmes after 9pm (when the STM stops) and watch whenever you want to. On the other hand, you may be using a Mac, or not want to have the kontiki software on your computer.

i have that, but that just downloads the programmes like torrent managers do, and that eventually gets throttled down. a bad example was the voyage of the damned doctor who episode (it got re-run recently on bbc three). the download took 3 days on my 2mb broadband with virgin media.

anywho, not an issue, i can still access freeview channels with my virgin media box and use iplayer there :-)

I upgraded a couple of weeks back, on this deal, too. First impression? Those high def progs eat up the hard disc space very very.... very quickly. I had a Sky+ 180 before which never got lower than 40% capacity, even with whole series stored. Now an hour of high def takes up around 5% alone. That's um er 20 episodes of Lost. Surprisingly stingy. This means I actually have to watch these things within a certain amount of time. How inconvenient is that?

@ilovethemonkeyhead - you're on the 2Mbit package? Seriously...

@Moche - Well mine is installed tomorrow so will watch for that. Footy in HD was my primary motivation though (I have my Pioneer hooked up over HDMI to my computer for HD content I can download - plenty of HDD space there :)

But for multiroom isn't it &#16320/month per extra telly that is Sky HD - &#16310 for the multiroom and &#16310 if you want that to be HD :-(

&#16310 is probably bearable but &#16320 is pure sky i.e. gouging

A few months ago I thought i would take the plunge and go for sky, what a mistake! i just settled for the normal sky+ box @&#16375, i then had to pay &#163150 to get a cable hooked up to my communal system. i plugged my sky+ box in, and it only gets some of the channels, at first i thought it was a faulty signal, but a friends box gets them all when plugged into my signal. The engineers came out, and said i need a different make of box, i.e., not a pace, and was told if i change to sky HD, then that is a Thompson box, but now even though i havent received sky properly yet, they are classing me as an existing customer, and want &#163310!!!!! They have basically jsut given me the finger, and are happy to take my money without providing me with the service promised, so anyone thinking of getting a sky+ box instead of HD DON'T!!!!
