The Canon Ixus 50 is thin (21mm), the Nikon Coolpix S1 is thinner (19.7mm), the FujiFilm FinePix Z1 is malnourished (18.6mm), but the new Casio Exilm Card EX-S500 is positively on hunger strike (16mm).
The full measurements are 90 x 59 x 16mm (13.7mm at its thinnest point) and it weighs 115g. I have to say I’m rather stunned, not just because of the camera’s dainty size, but because it still carries a full feature set.
The S500 takes five megapixel photos, has a 3x optical zoom and 33 (count em) shooting modes. The screen on the back is a proportionately huge 2.2in and there’s full VGA, 30fps video with compression so that you’ll fit approximately one hour twenty minutes onto a 1GB SD Card. Battery life is a cracker too, with 200 shots able to be taken on a single charge (based on CIPA standards).
So if, like me, you’re positively foaming at the mouth about now, you’ll be pleased to know you won’t have to wait long to get your shaking hands on one: they’re out in July. Casio says two colours will be available at launch, dark silver (top) or a limited edition “white” (middle), but we also found this coppery colour (below), which is confusing us a little.
Whatever the colour combos, the price is not cheap at £299 including VAT, but who could resist this little fella? Come to Daddy…
Many thanks to Simon who pointed out to us that the Sony DSC T7 is just as thin as the S500 (we can't know everything, even with our big swollen heads). At 117g, it is just 2g heavier than the S500 as well (I'll bet the T7 is cursing not doing that extra cardio training and stripping off to its briefs during the weight in). It costs the same as the S500 with an RRP of £299 including VAT and interested readers can find the full spec on Sony's UK site here (sorry for not providing a direct link to the camera itself, but Sony's urls mess with our article coding - we're working on it!). PS - if you see an advert for the T7 on our site, you're just imagining it (ummmm... yes... it's all in your dreams... listen to the sound of my keyboard... you're feeling very sleepy... zzzzzzzzzz). Phew.
