Sanyo Upgrades Tiny Xacti Camcorder

The Sanyo Xacti line has always startled with its diminutive form factors, but they haven't always won sway with our no-nonsense Digital Photography Editor. Could this latest edition change at last Cliff's mind?

Greeted with much uproar this week is the 'Xacti CG9' a new benchmark for its entry level offerings which claims to now capture stills at a hefty 9.1 megapixels (and 5x optical zoom, no less) and add in that face recognition technology we're hearing so much about recently.

On top of this, the CG9 has had something of a face lift actually getting a little chunkier and heavier (not words you associate with technology evolution) after market research told Sanyo previous generations actually felt too slim and slight! Aside from this the CG9 isn't HD capable but it will happily shoot in VGA at an impressive 60fps in the space saving H.264 codec and while it makes the (dubious) switch from CCD to CMOS (I can hear Cliff grinding his teeth from here) Sanyo does claim it has made huge leaps forward with this standard and will consequently be able to offer the CG9 at a 'very aggressive price'.

Japan's Akihabara got first dibs on the CG9 so we can break from the usual Photoshopped 'floating' snaps that greet most releases. Fingers' crossed for more news on a European launch soon.

So will Cliff tear it to pieces or greet it with a loving hug? Place your bets now...
