Sanyo Demonstrates Short-Throw HD Projector

Sanyo Demonstrates Short-Throw HD Projector

We've seen our share of short throw projectors, but the Sanyo's latest, which it has shown off in Japan, is particularly noteworthy, offering a Full HD, 1080p resolution with a rather impressive throw ratio.

A throw ratio of 0.28 means the projector can produce a 100in image on a surface from a mere 23.6in (~2ft) away and a 150in image at a distance of 37in (~3.1ft). Add to that brightness of 7,000 lumens, which Sanyo claims as a world's best, thanks to the three-panel RGB laser DLP tech powering the projector and, of course, that 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution.

The downsides? For a start there's no word on whether the prototype projector is planned to become a real product, or how much it would cost if it was! And at 2370mm × 510mm × 630mm in size, it's definitely not one for the average home.

Nonetheless, it's an interesting sign of we can expect from Sanyo in the future. Let's just hope the technology is shrinkable.

That's hilarious - it reminded me of those huge RGB projector TV's that used to be all the trend in some pubs 20 years ago. Now if they could just squeeze that into a mobile phone, on pay as you...

I thought that picture was some bad perspective work in photoshop.. till I read the dimensions.. that thing is huge!

...I agree with jopey - the projector is 93" wide - without seeing the dimensions of the lens, that seems rather poor that it can only project 7" wider than itself at 2ft. The photo did look like an optical illusion at first (or a very small woman...)

The obvious thing is to stick some cushions on it and presto ......

A Projector-Settee :)

@basicasic, The obvious thing is to stick some cushions on it and presto .....

Only one snag there, this is a short throw PJ and you would want your Settee at least 6 foot away, so you'd end up with a screen size of about 300 inch, might be a tad big especially from 6 foot away.. :) Unless of course this is the settee you don't sit on while watching the movie.

I like the sound of that, but I don't want to sit less than four feet away from a 150in image!

There seems be a competition for these short throw projectors, I cant understand what this would be used for other than to beat up competitors. Trouble for me is I want a projector that throws a 120" picture from a distance of 16ft. I have a small room behind my larger cellar that I want to use for the projector and AV reciver etc the larger room will be a nice seperate fan free cinema room. Anyone any ideas as what to look for that does not cost an arm and a leg.
