Freddy Mercury never knew quite how prophetic the line “Flash - a-ah - he'll save everyone of us” would be for technology in the 21st Century when he penned the classic ‘Flash’s Theme’ for the superbly named turkey flick “Flash Gordon”, but were he alive today I’m sure there’d be a tear in his eye from SanDisk’s latest efforts. Perhaps not… but I can’t be responsible for everything I write, right?

No matter the Queen legend’s personal take, hardcore photographers and the storage hungry are going to be particularly pleased with the company’s new 12 and 16GB Extreme III CompactFlash cards and their miniature sibling, the 4GB Ultra II SDHC.

Speed is very much the emphasis with these products with the CFs providing minimum write and read speeds of a whopping 20MBps and the SDHC giving the majority of its rivals a kicking with nine and 10MBps write and read speeds respectively.

There is an incredible 10 year warranty on both the Extreme III cards when they are released in December but you’ll want it with them costing 475 euros and 633 euros respectively. The 4GB Ultra II will be a more mainstream 123 euros, comes bundled with a MicroMate USB adapter and sees the light of day next month.

A Kind of Magic, would Freddy have said? Who am I to speculate, but I’d like to think that neatly sums up his feelings ;)

Note: SDHC is not backwards compatible with older SD readers and devices, check your product can take the new standard. Be warned my children.
