Samsung Unveils 8MP, GPS Toting Tocco Ultra Edition

Despite our reservations, the Samsung Tocco has proved to be one of the biggest selling handsets in the UK since its May 2008 launch, so time for an update...

The 'Tocco Ultra Edition' has today been unveiled just ahead of the Mobile World Congress next week and it makes a number of major improvements to its forebear.

Primarily - and most noticeably - is Samsung's decision to strap a 3x4 keypad to the Ultra Edition to make dialling numbers easier while also appeasing those still most comfortable messaging with T9. Despite the return to physicality however the handset also ups its touchscreen game by using an AMOLED 2.8in enhanced Haptic feedback display with WQVGA resolution. The exterior too has a more rugged brushed aluminium finish.

Inside you'll also find a top notch feature set including 7.2Mbit HSDPA, GPS, an 8MP camera with dual power LED flash, auto focus, face detection and geotagging. Other highlights include DivX/Xvid/H.264 video playback, an FM tuner, Bluetooth with A2DP, 30fps VGA recording and a microSDHC expansion slot support cards up to 16GB. At just 110 x 51.5 x 12.7mm the Tocco Ultra Edition is compact too though Samsung doesn't say how much it will weigh or how long we can expect the 880mAh battery to last.

Omissions? Well, the lack of WiFi stands out and could be a deal breaker for some while 75MB of native memory is nothing to write home about even if the microSDHC slot makes this something of a moot point. Lastly is something more theoretical: whether Samsung has managed to improve its UI shortcomings - something which has hamstrung the impressive specs of the original Tocco.

Riyad should be getting his paws on a review sample very soon, so you won't have to wait too long for the full lowdown.

What's "WQVGA" in the old money, then? Sites like wikipedia simply state that WQVGA is "the same height in pixels as QVGA, but wider."

Any chance you'd tell us the pixel-by-pixel size of the screen in addition to more nebulous terms like WQVGA?

QVGA = 320x240, since WXXX resolutions are defined by the aspect ratio (as mobile screens are still pretty split between widescreen as 16:9 and 16:10) it's kind of hard to put a figure on it, all that can be known is it will be something like ~400x240.

@Xamph - I didn't put a number on it because it is an ambiguous term Samsung used and it hasn't provided a pixel count. We've been trying to eek it out of them for some time. I'll update the story as soon as I know.
