Samsung Unveils 5MP, AMOLED, GPS Packing Candybar

We've hit a pretty good place when a handset like this settles into the midrange tier...

The Samsung 'l7110' (little 'l') is a seemingly modest candybar from the outside, but don't let appearances deceive you, this is one packed out handset with highlights including what should be a stunning 2.6in QVGA AMOLED display, a 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, HSDPA (3.6Mbit), WiFi and GPS with driver and pedestrian options (Apple, you hearing this?) plus geo-tagging.

The l7110 isn't finished there either with Smile and Blink shot camera modes, an accelerometer, FM radio, non-Microsoft, yay! Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 OS, a video player with native DivX, H.263, H.264, WMV, MP4 and RV codec support and music player which will happily handle MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA and RealAudio. A bunch of pre-installed games including FIFA 2008 and Asphalt are included as well.

Stumbling blocks could be the 50MB of native memory though that can be expanded with the 16GB microSD compatible expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0 (there is no mention of A2DP) and ever-so-slightly-chunky-but-ok-in-a-Sophie-Dahl-kinda-way 118 x 52 x 12.9mm dimensions. Still a 1200mAh battery (33 per cent larger than the one Nokia foolishly bizarrely chose to put in the N96) means you'll get up to remarkable 11 hours of talk time (EDGE) with optimum standby (no Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, etc) managing a whopping 427 hours - that's not far off two weeks!

Hitting Russia first (a growing trend we're not overly fond of) the Samsung l7110 is going to land in November and "will soon be introduced in other markets". All I can say to that is: not soon enough...
