Sony's XEL-1 OLED panel may have had us salivating like rabid stoats, but for all its wafer thinness it did lack in size somewhat and now Samsung is here to show you can have the best of both worlds with LCD.
The unnamed set measures just 10mm deep but still gives you a great 40in diagonal screen and a Full HD, 1080p resolution. Even better, the model is LED-backlit enabling it to provide ultra high (though unspecified) black levels. Samsung also claims a 92 per cent NTSC colour gamut, which lifts it right to the top of the HDTV market.
Alas pricing and availability have not been disclosed yet, but I expect it will cost somewhere in the region of "lots of money" though the old adage remains: you get what you pay for.
This waif will be on display at the Flat Panel Display Expo in Japan this week, so some more details may well emerge then. I know I say this a lot, but this really is one to keep an eye on!
