Samsung Omnia 2 Images & Video Leak

Let's say it straight: we weren't big fans of the Omnia and when Samsung decided to strip the Omnia branding from the i8910 HD at the last minute we weren't surprised in the least. That said, here's persistence for you...

Images (and indeed a video) have now leaked of the Samsung 'I8000', also known as the 'Omnia 2' and the improvements are striking.

Straight off the bat the I8000 blows away its forebear with a 3.7in WVGA touchscreen display (resistive in this case), an 8.1MP camera with dual LED flash, HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS. Native DivX / Xvid support is in there too along with 30fps video recording, Bluetooth with A2DP and the latest version of the company's TouchWiz UI which sports an LG Arena style cubic navigation system. That said, TouchWiz usually hides a Windows Mobile interface (6.1 we believe) so that should either seal the deal or break it for many.

Expect the I8000 / Omnia 2 to nestle in at a level below the i8910 HD. Furthermore, with official shots and video being leaked around the web this handset should become official very soon. I'm putting my money on Monday or Tuesday...

Update: The video gives away the Windows Mobile core and yes, the responsiveness of the UI worries us greatly. Early sample? Let's hope so or we won't only have an Omnia 2 but Omnia Troubles Mark 2.

Looking at the video it seemed to me that the poor user was having a hell of a time working with the cube interface! It was all over the shop. I think that this one will be filed in the 'not for me' category...

OMG! I hope that isn't an official video. Unresponsive pressing; slow refreshing, jerky animation - it's a horror story. Now you know why O2 and Apple can charge what they like.

"That said, TouchWiz usually hides a Windows Mobile interface (6.1 we believe) so that should either seal the deal or break it for many." The fact it has a windows button top left in the image and video would be a big give away. And that cube looks like a nightmare to use.

The ones to beat are the Palm Pre, anything Android and the iPhone. And Windows mobile anything == fail.
