Samsung, today, has launched five new compact cameras that will see the company extend its S, L and NV Series ranges in a bid to increase its claimed 15% share of the digital camera market.
First up is the 10.2-megapixel S1070, equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens featuring a focal length of 6.3mm ~ 18.9mm (35mm film equivalent: 30mm ~ 91mm, assuming a 1/1.8in sensor). This is wider, though not as 'zoomy' as its S1050 and S1030 siblings.
As for the rest of its features, the S1070 has a 2.7in so-called 'Intelligent' LCD that employs an ambient light sensor for controlling the LCD's brightness (meant to enhance visibility and battery life) in varying lighting conditions. It also comes with face detection, a maximum 1600 ISO rating, 10 scene modes including Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Backlight, Fireworks and Beach & Snow, plus the ubiquitous movie mode that lets users pause and zoom while recording. The S1070 will be available from September in silver, black, white, and pink, at an RRP of £99.

Next we see two models make their débuts in the L Series line-up, namely the L201 and L310W.
The L201, another 10.2-megapixel jobbie, pretty much shares the same spec as the S1070 in a smaller, slimmer, brushed metal chassis complete with a fancy white-coloured band around the body. It also features Auto Contrast Balance for bringing out shadow detail in scenes that are backlit, and the lithium-ion battery can be charged in-situ, so there's no need to carry around a separate battery charger. The L201 will be available from August in silver, black, pink, lime green and turquoise at an RRP of £129.
The L310W, on the other hand, squeezes a 13.6-megapixel sensor into a slim chassis and includes a 28mm (35mm film equivalent) wide-angle lens with a 3.6x optical zoom. Samsung has also thrown in its Perfect Portrait System, which includes smile and blink detection, along with 'Beauty Shot'. We've come across the first two before where in-camera algorithms can detect a person smiling then automatically take a shot, or recognise when a person's eyes are closed and so fire off some extra shots to ensure that at least one of the pics has captured the subject with their eyes open. But Beauty Shot, as the name alludes to, is for those with less-than perfect skin where blemishes and the like are automatically retouched and smoothed out.
With optical and digital stabilisation, and a maximum ISO rating of 3200, the L310W has the potential to offer good low-light performance. The L310W will be available in silver, black, pink and brown from September, at an RRP of £199.
