While 64GB SSDs are nothing new they are in a 1.8in form factor...

Samsung is the brains behind this breakthrough for ultra portable laptops and the sexily named 'MCCOE64G8MPR-03A' (*swoon*) is based on those 8Gb single level cell (SLC) NAND modules I told you about two weeks back – see, I said that was a boring, but important announcement ;)

The 100 per cent storage increase isn't the only thing Samsung has been working on though, oh no, there are also performance gains with the read and write performances increased by 20 per cent and 60 per cent respectively over the 32GB SSD Sammy showed off last year.

So when will we be able bin our existing moving parts drives in order to get our hands on this lighter, faster, more power efficient SSD? Well with Sammy beginning mass production in Q2 (which begins officially in just four days) the wait shouldn't be too long.

As for an RRP this was also kept top secret – though I would suspect primarily because flash memory prices are falling so fast Samsung itself doesn't know what they will be in a few months time.

Isn't that last sentence music to your ears...?
