One of the most frequent questions I get asked about mobile phone (apart from "Should I get an iPhone?") is will x, y or z work in this country or that country. Well, here comes your white light...

The Samsung "SGH-T578H" is the World's first (you just knew it had to be) TD-SCDMA HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE multi-model handset meaning no matter where you go on the planet your phone will work - and potentially at 3G speeds.

Philips' offshoot 'NXP' and Samsung, Motorola and Datang Mobile joint venture 'T3G' both worked in conjunction with Sammy on the T578H and said their inspiration came from next year's Beijing Olympics where use of China's 3G network is expected to be in great demand by visitors from all over the globe.

"Samsung has always been at the cutting edge of mobile technology. Together with NXP and T3G, we have achieved several major milestones for TD-SCDMA phones - from the first TD-SCDMA video phone to this current high data transfer rate TD-HSDPA dual-band prototype," said W.S. Lee, VP of Handset R&D. "Multimedia and sharing of content will be the drivers for next-generation handsets. The combination of T3G's leading TD-SCDMA technology and NXP's very innovative EVP technology, make them obvious partners of choice to provide consumers a high-end multimedia experience in a run up to the Beijing Olympics."

As you might have expected the T578H is just a prototype at this stage but it marks an important point in the development of globally 3G capable products - which is surely the next goal for all high end handsets. Expect to see the tech licensed by all and sundry over the next 12/18 months...

...perhaps including Apple...
