Rumour: MSI Wind U200 to Launch Next Week

Whether the apparently soon-to-be-launched Wind U200 should be sold under the same name as MSI's netbooks is a matter for debate, but there's no denying it looks interesting. For a start, the use of a ‘real' CULV processor seems a smart one, especially as Dell has just killed off its Atom-powered 12in Mini 12, saying systems of that size needed more power.

The 12in display has a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution, fast becoming the minimum to expect at such a size. The upped specs over Atom-based rivals means MSI is deeming fit to put Vista on the U200.

The U200's 1.3GHz SU2700 Pentium CPU is combined with 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and Draft-N Wi-Fi. An HDMI output is present, complimented by three USB ports and a card reader. A six-cell battery should provide a half-decent lifespan.

Availability is listed as three to four weeks, with pricing starting at €629 (~£540). We'll have to wait and see what UK pricing is like, but sub £600-odd seems a reasonable guess.

it's a bit weird to see any firms selling their upcoming laps with Vista but win 7.

Other than that, not impressed. No unique selling point to me.

£600 is way way too expensive considering a very respectable 15inch Core2 laptop can be brought for that. Why are these manufacturers refusing to understand that these are 2nd/3rd system utility computers. They should be aiming to sell a LOT of these in supermarkets rather than up-selling a small quantity. The additional features come in as technology progresses to allow it, not as add on costs.

Why consider a 15inch laptop when you want portability and/or battery life? This operates in a totally different segment for most consumers.
