Rumour: Acer Dual-Boot Android & XP Netbook Coming in August

You probably know Acer has said it plans to launch a netbook running both Android and Windows XP, but you likely didn't know when it was launching. Well, if Chinese publication Apple Daily's sources are correct, you now do: August this year.

The report apparently also states that although both Asus and MSI have Android-powered netbooks planned, neither company intends to launch such a system this year. As such Acer should be the first manufacturer to bring an Android netbook to market; giving us a benchmark against which to measure succeeding systems.

The choice to bundle XP and Android together may seem curious or annoying at first for a few reasons, the obvious one being that a Windows licence will still be required there's going to be no cost reduction for Android's inclusion. However, bearing in mind that (reportedly) some 96 per cent of netbooks run XP it's perhaps not such a startling choice. No doubt many users will want the benefits of Android (fast boot times, quick access to more basic applications and so forth) to be paired with the familiarity of XP; and the ensuing ability to run 'real' programs.

We'll see whether that proves true come august, it seems.

The front page says "Acer, MSI not following suit this year". You probably mean Asus.

Why bother with Android when a Linux distro would do the job? I don't get it...

Because it has the Google name.(It's based on Linux too so you are getting it anyway)
