Rumour: Acer Laptop With 3D Display Arriving October

Acer is developing a laptop with a 3D display which it plans to release in October, according to Campbell Kan, vice president of the mobile computing business unit at Acer.

The laptop is being co-developed with Wistron, who have previously been rumoured to be producing a 3D notebook for HP. The Acer system features a 15.6in display and currently requires glasses to enable the 3D effect. However, Acer says it's working on a glasses-free 3D display, which would be much more tempting on a portable system.

The system will apparently come with software which will convert 2D films into 3D. How that will work, exactly, isn't specified. Whether the 3D system is use is proprietary, or simply a portable version of a third party 3D tech, such as nVidia 3D Vision, is unknown as yet.

Interestingly, the laptop will run Windows 7 - explaining the October launch frame - and no official announcements will be made before the OS launches. We'll be waiting a few months to see what Acer has up its sleeve to persuade consumers they want 3D in their laptop.
