We know it will pack the least power of the next generation consoles, we know the controller looks like a TV remote and we know it had the most shambolic unveiling last year, but could its RRP be about to save the Revolution?
To be fair, a few more promising aspects have raised their heads since these dark days for Nintendo. Games support looks to be assured with all the company’s most famous characters set for new adventures at launch and there has even been the odd report that the queer controller is not a complete dog. That said, price looks set to be its biggest ally.
Speaking on Friday last week Nintendo VP of Sales and Marketing Reggie (yes, people are still called ‘Reggie’) Fils-Aime announced that the Revolution will sell for less than $300: under £170 in UK coin. We don’t know how this could be eeked up for the British market, but with the decent version of the Xbox 360 (you all need the ‘optional’ HDD, ok?) going for £279.99 that’s a significant saving. On top of this, the PS3 is rumoured to cost in excess of £300 when it launches later this year.
“We resolve at Nintendo to remain within reach for the vast majority of our consumers,” said Fils-Aime, who also revealed the company’s four step plan aimed at restoring some much needed industry credibility. “First, focusing on a single-minded gaming device. Second, bringing real innovation to the controller in the way consumers play the game. Third, a value orientation that certainly is not present with our competitors. And fourth, leveraging the power of our library with the virtual consoles.” Decipher the marketing spiel in that and we’ve got: 1. Schizophrenia is bad 2. We hope the controller doesn’t suck. 3. It’s cheap. 4. We can live off our previous successes.
Well, I don’t know about you but that seems a pretty fair battle plan. I still maintain that no-one who can afford to buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 will be buying a Revolution (apart from Riyad) but – given those consoles’ hefty price tags – that may leave a significantly higher number than either Microsoft or Sony banked on…
