Revamped Xbox 360 Already in Short Supply

Microsoft may only have released its updated Xbox 360 250GB last Friday, but it seems it’s already facing stock shortages.

According to Electronic Theatre major suppliers such as Tesco, Sainsburys and GAME have all raced through their stock allocation over the weekend. Local stockists also have had to turn people away, with one reporting that they had, “greatly underestimated the demand for the new unit”.

The refreshed console offers support for Microsoft’s much vaunted ‘Kinect’ technology, and also offers goodies such as integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi, an engorged 250GB hard disk and five USB ports.

It also smaller, sleeker and runs more quietly, courtesy of its die-shrinked 45nm GPU and a single large fan replacing the two noisy ones, making it a tempting upgrade proposition for existing owners as well as for new customers.

With Microsoft recently facing the embarrassment of total failure over its Kin mobile phone, at least it now has a success story to crow about.

Have you managed to get your hands on the Xbox 360 250GB already? Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

Got mine yesterday and believe it to be a well crafted machine... at long last. The gloss is rather attractive in all honesty, the press shots don't do it justice. The venting, if a little excessive is much more design friendly as opposed to the punched holes in the previous models. Now the heavily mentioned 'silence' of the new machine is very misleading. The actual Xbox itself is fantastically quiet while idol and good bit louder with a disc (but much improved over the older disc drives). But, the power brick has a fan running on the inside, and for me anyway, it is significantly more audible than the console itself. I cant tell if I have a defective power brick or not but I question why this new 135w brick needs a more powerful/ loud fan when the 203w/175w/150w did not.

P.S. When I first opened the disc tray it had a greasy residue plastered on the underside- slightly worrying. So overall its a much better constructed machine with the fine finish of uncertainty you can only get from Microsoft.

I'm not suprised its in short supply. Its a gorgeous looking console and has the best library of games by far, on any system.

I'll stick with my old 360, it would look great beside my fat ps3.

I'm very happy with mine. I love how silent it is. The glossy black attracts dust like you wouldn't believe though! (I'd have preferred the console in white...)

I'll be avoiding this one. Screenshots of the machine are horrible (granted it will probably look better "in the flesh") but for me the farse that was the Elite that I bought still leaves a bitter taste. It's much like the iPhone 4 fiasco - I bought an Elite to play games, not to sit gathering dust in a broken down RROD state. What I will say though is that after coming back the first time "fixed" it ran very much quieter than before and there wasnt a noise issue at all. Im sure the very old 360s will be like night and day with this one but the newer of the old breed may not be too different.

I dispute the best library argument from PermeDMulleT slightly - it's a matter of opinion but I mostly agree. GOW2 was played to death while Resistance 2 was rushed through as yet another run of the mill FPS. I've come to an age where shelling out this sort of money on a gaming machine has to come with something extra - the PS3 delivers a lot more overall. But again, its all a matter of opinion.

Resisted trading, I was offered £50 for old arcade and £25 for 120GB drive. Might as well keep it. My advice wait till October for the Christmas bundles. I'm looking forward to FIFA 11 for freeish.

I'm tempted to sell my ps3 and get this on now that it has the features the original ps3 had back in 2006! Only reason is Sky player which is cheaper then paying for sky normally.

But i guess as soon as I do, sky will announce a player on the PS3!

Benny - welcome back! Are we likely to see a lot of you and does this bode the return of Spode?

@Peter Morris - we're all still in touch with Spode, but he's a very busy chap these days, working mainly on Think Bikes. You can follow his efforts at: http://www.thinkbikes.com/

If you're looking for bundles here's one at Argos: new xbox plus Halo 3, Halo Wars, Forza 2, Gears of War 2, PGR4 and Fable 2 for £210 plus a voucher for a fiver off your next game. That ought to get you off to a good start if you're new to the console as I am. Plus, with it being Argos they tend to get well allocated but people don't always think to shop there so you're likely to get one. Good luck!

@Joe: Good recommendation. +with their Argos Card, you can pay it off over 6 months with no interest.

@Jones: I'm not sure what your dispute was, as your final statement actually fully agreed with @PermeDMulleT...
