RC2 Firefox & Vista Launched

It’s a time for nearlies this week with both Firefox 2.0 (awaited with some anticipation) and Windows Vista (awaited with some trepidation) almost out the door.

Both hit RC2 this week, for the uninitiated this stands for ‘Release Candidate 2’ and both are unlikely to appear in public again before their official release.

For Vista this means build number 5744 and while it doesn’t introduce anything spectacularly new (features were bolted down by the first RC) it does promise improved security and better stability.

“We are just around the corner from RTM and shipping this great product to the world,” crowed Microsoft’s Co-President of Platforms and Services Division, Jim Allchin. “This will be the last build made available prior to RTM, so please keep the feedback coming so we can hit the finish line.”

Vista has had a long and torturous development but if you want to test drive the last publicly available free version head on over here.

As for Firefox RC2 it also builds on a pretty established feature set but will include a number cool features including toolbar buttons which now glow when you hover over them, predictive search text entry, user alerts for sites with addable search engines, close tab buttons on each tab, scrollable tabs, inline spell checking and an add-on manager for managing extensions and themes.

Furthermore Javascript has been updated to version 1.7, there’s a new Windows installer based on the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System and built in a session restore feature (a popular third party add-in) which restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms and in-progress downloads from the last user session. A new shortcut will also keep a list of recently closed tabs and let users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.

Firefox 2.0 RC2 can be downloaded here but note many of your existing extensions may not work in this version.

As I said, trepidation and anticipation…

Update: There's an RC3 of Firefox now, so what do I know? ;) Get it here.
