Quake 4 Ships

I’m shaking with excitement about this one (sorry couldn’t resist). Quake 4 has shipped to retailers.

The official release date is 21 October so we’ve just two more days before those killjoys, also known as shop keepers, take the copies from their highly guarded backrooms and merrily dish out virtual guts and gore to the testosterone fuelled masses.

The story – for what its worth (1. because who cares about story in an ID game? and 2. I already sketched it out here) – in the developer’s words is: “{you take} the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race.” Did they mean to put Rhino and penetrate so close together? Who knows? Anyway, think Aliens with different aliens.

Either way, there should be more variation to the game than we saw in (perhaps disappointing) Doom 3 as players get to fight alongside other marines this time as well as man vehicles for some industrial sized killin’. The multiplayer element is promoted as racing along at a similar speed to Quake 3 Arena, which will make it pretty darn fast, while it looks glorious since it uses a tweaked version of the stunning Doom 3 graphics engine.

FPS fans (that’s First Person Shooter, not frames per second in this case, but could apply to both), I suggest you also pick up a copy of F.E.A.R. while you’re parting with your cash. It’s supremely good.
