Better late than never...
Yep whilst the preposterous claim that Plextor has unveiled "the first truly pocket-sized external hard disk" (however did that line get through pre-press screening) the formidable storage company has announced a pair of admittedly small 1.8in external portable hard drives.
The 60GB 'PX-PPH60U' and 120GB 'PX-PPH120U' weigh in at just 90g, measure 90 x 62 x 12mm and sport USB 2.0 interfaces (what else?) though Plextor doesn't elaborate on the actual speeds of the drives themselves (3,600RPM seems the most likely candidate).
"The Plextor Pocket HDDs are incredibly useful, offering much more scope than memory sticks with the footprint of a credit card," said clearly enthused Plextor Sales and Marketing Manager Rudy De Meirsman. "The fast USB transfer is ideal for transporting multimedia and data files. They are perfect for both novice and enthusiast home users, audio/visual businesses such as photographers and marketing agencies - in fact anybody who needs a portable high reliability data solution."
Maybe Rudy, maybe - but they certainly aren't "the first truly pocket-sized external hard disk" - sheesh, I'll never get over that one.
The PX-PPH60U and PX-PPH120U will hit the market next month which is when their RRPs will be revealed. I hope as "the first truly pocket-sized external hard disk" they don't cost the earth, despite it being such a ground breaking new product category...
Sorry. Not getting over it anytime soon.
