Although unofficially announced earlier this year, Plextor’s PlexEraser (model number PX-OE100E) has only just touched down in an official form. The name gives the game away, but the drive is certainly one you won’t want to mix up with your regular CD/DVD burner.
Whereas the job of most drives is to read and write information, the job of the PlexEraser is to destroy it and destroy it beyond all recovery.
Unlike conventional disc shredders the PlexEraser doesn’t physically break up the disc but instead uses a powerful laser to burn away segments of data making the disc unreadable. It is compatible with all types of DVD plus and minus media are compatible as well as CD-R/RW, though RAM discs get to live another day.
A bright orange interior to the drive is coupled with an idiot-proof warning message: “WARNING: Data and disc destruction” so any accidental disc slaughtering is completely your fault and you should sit in a corner wearing a hat with a large D on it. Once destroyed (which takes approximately three minutes) busted media is separated from operational discs by three concentric circles burned into the data side.
Plextor is marketing the PlexEraser primarily at security conscious organisations like financial institutions, government departments, the military, research establishments, Spode’s midget porn collection, etc but I have a feeling that it will catch on with delusional paranoid cautious citizens out there too.
The PlexEraser is available immediately and is good value with web prices starting from just £112 including VAT. That said, it is £112 more expensive than snapping the disc over your knee and takes two minutes 58 seconds longer…
