PlayStation Production Finally Halted

It arrived in December 1994, sold more than 100m units but the time of the original PlayStation has finally come to an end. In a statement on Friday, Sony announced that it has decided to cease all production immediately. The move is thought to have been made to allow the company to allocate greater resources to its upcoming PS3.

Like the passing of an aged movie star, the news will bring a tear to the eye of many even if the console’s appearance in public had become increasingly rare. There is probably not a single reader here who cannot fondly remember a certain title or specific moment locked in mortal combat with a friend or family member.

My personal favourite was battering my younger brother at FIFA soccer and screaming ‘Weahhhh!’ as the former Milan and PSG great thundered yet another picture book goal past his despairing goalkeeper. (He may dispute this)

Still time marches on and - thankfully - in the technology industry there is always something better on the horizon. In the case of the PlayStation we’ve already had the PS2 and the PS3 should be entertaining us before the end of the year. For those feeling nostalgic, however, Sony has announced that it is working on an emulator to let PlayStation titles run on the PSP. It will publish full details at a later date, but I'm already getting the urge for some FIFA brother bashing.
