While we were hoping for an announcement in early December regarding the possibility of a PlayStation Phone, it seems increasingly likely we will now have to wait until Mobile World Congress in February for an official announcement.
However, if anonymous sources quoted by Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun can be believed, consumers could have the device in their hands as early as next Spring. And in good news for European and American consumers, the device could go on sale in those regions first. While this would all be welcome news coming from Sony, anonymous sources are by their nature less than 100 percent accurate most of the time so we’ll have to wait and see.
Another issue surrounding the phone is the name it will go under. While initially people thought it could be called simply the PlayStation Phone or the PSP Phone, reports earlier this month suggested it would be called the Zeus or the Z1. However a more recent release from Sony Ericsson, inviting the UK media to an event on January 6 suggests the Android-running device could fall into the Xperia line of phones with the Xperia Play suggested as a possible name.
While Sony has yet to give an official word even on the existence of the phone, it seems there can be no smoke without fire and it will be a matter of when rather than if this device will be unveiled. With Sony Ericsson seriously needing a win in the mobile phone market, the PlayStation Phone/Zeus/PSP Phone/Z1/Xperia Play could well provide it.
