There's no point harping on about the brilliance of the iPlayer any more. We've done plenty of that already with announcements like the launch of the iPod Touch and iPhone version as well as the new Wii version. Instead, today we're bringing you news of a less palatable flavour, namely the iPlayer that we were expecting for the PS3, although still coming, isn't going to be ready any time soon.
Speaking on the BBC Blog, Head of Digital Media Technology and Future Media Technology, Anthony Rose commented that:
"We'd love to be on every popular device tomorrow, including the PS3, and it was on our roadmap. However, the reality is that we only have finite developer resources, and we need to divide our development time between expanding the platforms iPlayer is available on versus all the other cool things that we're working on (better video quality, personalisation, new site features, etc)."
He went on to commend the recently announced third-party hack which, basically, enables the PS3 to access the iPlayer by pretending to be a Wii although emphasised that technological barriers aren't the only ones in the way of providing this functionality to PlayStation owners.
To put it simply, the PS3 iPlayer will be coming in due course. Just don't hold your breath, folks…
