PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.53 Detailed

There have to be at least three, maybe even four, of you out there who want full screen Flash playback on the PS3. Firmware version 2.53, supposedly available tomorrow, is the firmware for you, then, as according to CVG it adds just that functionality.

Having already seen an upgrade from the previously horrendously outdated Flash version used by its browser to Flash 9, in Firmware 2.5, the revision isn't exactly surprising. It is a little strange that the feature wasn't there already.

As great an all-round device as the PS3 is, though, I doubt that many people use it for the web browser. And of those I expect even less watch many flash videos - as addictive as watching Charlie the Unicorn on the newly-widescreen YouTube can be.

Might be getting ready to launch some silly web-based PS3-store/type flash games?

Gotta make use of those cores somehow ;)

@autobarn - I didn't know it was possible to watch iplayer on the PS3. I am sure I have seen articles about how the PS3 is likely to be the next console (after wii) to support this. Are you saying it is there already? Surely then this full screen flash update is actually quite a big deal.

I've been using the PS3 web browser function on a large Plasma in the living room for quite a while now and it is surprisingly good. I originally intended building a media PC for this purpose but will not bother now. I like how you can zoom in close on a page with the click of the L3 button and then adjust the zoom further using the L2 and R2 keys - clever. All of my favorite websites are bookmarked and are one click away just like you would do on a PC. In fact, the PS3 has been absolutely fantastic as a home media centre. I'd buy another one tomorrow if it broke (mine is an original 60gb). As someone who has spent many thousands of pounds over the years on PCs and upgrades I think the unit is ridiculously cheap for what you get. I've spent more money on a graphics card. It is a pity that right from the very beginning Sony have been unable to persuade or demonstrate to the consumer the real value behind their incredible product.

A web programmer set up a site: www.ps3iplayer.com to show the BBC how easy it would be to make the site PS3 friendly. It works perfectly.

... and I use my PS3 to browse the net on my HD plasma all the time, it's great. (I bought a Viewsonic wireless keyboard from Amaz*n for &#16326, it's the business.)
