If you saw our review of the Commodore XX Gaming PC last month, but at over £2,600, considered it slightly out of your price range, then the retro-branded manufacturers collaboration with e-tailer Play.com may well entice you to part with a wad of your hard earned cash.
Coming in at £999.99 (Under £1000!!) the “g” series system is at the lowest end of the Commodore spectrum, but nonetheless packs a pretty hefty punch. Fitted with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Q6600, 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM and an nVidia 8800 GTS 320MB plugged into an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard.
However, the deal isn’t quite as clear cut as it seems; while your PC ships from Play.com, your purchase also gives you a “voucher” entitling you to select your custom “C-kin” from Commodore itself who will ship that separately. Play.com will ship the system with the standard black C-kin, so you could consider it getting two for the price of one.
While this isn’t necessarily a problem, the question of why you wouldn’t just purchase direct from Commodore does pop-up, especially as you then get the option to customise your machine as you wish, adding in a better graphics card or more RAM for example by doing so; not to mention faster delivery times. On the other hand, there's no price premium for using Play, so if you can wrangle a discount then you may well be able to secure a better deal this way.
We've heard back from Commodore as to how the changeable C-kin will work; the new skin (I'm sorry, I can't cope with these dodgy spellings) comes as four panels which screw in place of the existing ones. we are assured that this is easier than t may sound and that even an ape could manage it.
