Photokina Show Report Pt. 3

Leading memory card manufacturer SanDisk were showing a range of new ultra-fast high capacity SDHC and CompactFlash cards, as well as pre-production mock-ups of a couple of stylish new card readers.

The new Extreme III 32GB CompactFlash and 4GB, 8GB and 16GB SDHC cards feature a data transfer speed of 30MB/s, while the new Extreme IV 16GB CompactFlash card is even faster at an amazing 45MB/s. The new cards are aimed at the latest high-definition solid-state video cameras, as well as top DSLR cameras such as the new Canon EOS 5D Mk II, which can also shoot HD video.

The 30MB/s Extreme III cards will go on sale later this month, with the SDHC cards priced at US$64.99 for 4GB, US$109.99 for 8GB and US$179.99 for 16GB, while the 32GB Extreme III CF card will retail at US$299.99. The 16GB Extreme IV CF card is already available for US$399.99. UK prices have yet to be confirmed.

The two new ImageMate All-In-One card readers are faster and smaller than previous models, and it has to be said they look fantastic. The main body of the readers are smooth slabs of shiny black plastic that bears a striking resemblance to the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The body is held on to the optional tripod stand by a magnetic clip. Both readers are capable of transferring one gigabyte of data in less than 35 seconds. No launch date or price has yet been confirmed.
