Philips Launches 21.9 'Cinema' Aspect HDTV

Proving it isn't afraid to try something a little crazy, Philips has announced the latest addition to its high end HDTV line: the ‘Cinema 21:9 LCD TV'.
Yes, the model name rather destroys my thunder but this is indeed the very first consumer orientated 21:9 ultra wide aspect ratio High Definition TV. That's Panavision 70mm film!

Little is given away about the key specs (resolution, contrast ratio and response time would be nice) but we do know it will measure a huge 56 inches and is outfitted with three sided Ambilight Spectra technology for an extra wow factor.

"Traditional LCD televisions compromise on this experience by distorting the picture to fill the screen - losing the full scope of the original shot - or by displaying the picture in letterbox format with black bars at the top and bottom," proclaimed Philips. "Cinema 21:9 solves these issues to give the viewer an uncompromised and absorbing cinematic viewing experience, never before available in the home."

16:9 content will also be ‘adapted' to fit the 21:9 aspect ratio screen but it will be interesting to see if this is little more than just elaborate stretching or zooming. That said with a spring release timeframe it could provide the ultimate set for vertical black bar haters.

Horizontal black bar haters on the other hand? Not, so much.
